Did you know that many new reporters first assignments are to write obituaries? What would you think about having to write one of these?
Elements that make up an obituary are information about the person, their family, when and where they were born and died. I would expect to read about where the funeral service is going to be held and what the person's passions were and little things about him or her. I didn't know that obituaries are one of the first assignments for a new reporter. I think it's a good starting place because it's simple and not very complex. It may be sad but enough practice would lead up to good skills to write main news stories.

Fun in the Sun Story
Jenny was pregnant with her first child and she was thrilled. All she had ever wanted was a baby to call her own.
She spent night and day thinking about how her life would be once the baby was born. Her husband was just as excited as she was. They couldn't wait to start this new chapter in their lives together.
Months went by and Jenny's due date was getting closer. She had been planning and getting everything ready since she found out she was pregnant. The moment she'd been waiting for was almost here.
The day came. Her water broke and she was going into labor. She was so excited. Her husband rushed her to the hospital as fast as he could.
She was put into a room right away. The baby wasn't quite ready so she was in labor for several hours. She was in a lot of pain, so she decided to get the epidural shot. It didn't help and the pain continued. She started to get nervous.
Jenny was taken to an examination room. The doctor checked her out and didn't have good news. He put his hand on her arm and said gently,"You or the baby will survive. Not both. I'm sorry." Jenny broke down in tears with a look of disbelief. She couldn't believe this was happening.

Final Movie Review
Captain Phillips will leave you not wanting to go out to sea ever
again.
I have just seen
the movie Captain Phillips and would
like to give my opinion on it. It is a fantastic movie with great actors. The
movie is filled with suspense and may even send shivers down somebody’s spine.
There is some action, but also heart-warming moments. It is one of the best
movies that I have ever seen.
The plot of the
story takes place in an ocean near the coast of Somali during the year 2009.
The main characters are Captain Phillips and the captain of the Somali pirates,
Muse. The story is about an American ship that is going to deliver cargo to
another country, but they have to travel through Somali waters. The Captain of
the ship is kidnapped by Somali pirates whenever the pirates take over
Phillips’ ship. The pirates demand money the whole time and refuse to leave
them alone without it.
I think all
actors did a marvelous job. Tom Hanks, who plays Captain Phillips, is really
good at making everything seem so real. He plays his role exactly as someone
would that was in that situation. Barkhad Abdi, plays Muse, is the captain of
the Somali pirates, and makes it seem as if he has actually played that role in
real life before. The way he speaks and acts is on point with the whole thing.
Barkhad Abdirahman, plays Bilal in the movie and he is just as good as his
partner Muse. He plays his role well because of how dramatic he is. Faysal
Ahmed, who is Najee in the movie, demonstrates his qualities so well that it
seems as if he is a professional at kidnapping. Mahat M. Ali plays Elmi in the
movie and he is also a good actor. He’s not as harsh and some of the others but
still does an excellent job.
What I liked the
most about the movie was ensemble effort of the cast. Whenever something bad
happened or was going to happen, all the actors would work together and look
out for one another to try to make sure everything was okay. When the Somali
pirates invaded their ship, all of the crew members tried to make it difficult
for the pirates to get to Captain Phillips’ men, either by putting glass on the
floor or tricking them. I didn’t like the subtitles in the movie. It took my
attention off of what was going on in the movie at the time.
I learned from
this movie that anybody is able to get through anything with good people behind
their back helping. Even though bad things happen to good people, there is
always something better that comes out of a scary situation. I think other
people will learn from this story to always have faith. Anything is possible,
good or bad, but keeping hope could potentially save your life.
Mainly adults would enjoy this movie. I would
recommend it to anybody that likes a movie with suspense. On a scale of one to
10 with 10 being the best, this movie was a nine to me. It was good all around
with very little to complain about, an excellent movie.

Last week an inmate who was scheduled to be executed in Oklahoma was given the lethal injection, but there were problems with the drug mixture and it took him over 40 minutes to die. While observers and prison officials watched he writhed and struggled before finally succumbing to a heart attack. Lethal injections and the use of the death penalty have come under fire because of this event. The problems really started about a year ago because the main supplier of the drug combination went out of business and states have struggled to find replacements that are as powerful and work as well.
If someone has been convicted in a state that has the death penalty, what should the obligations of the state be when it comes to actually executing that person? I am not asking you what you think about the death penalty, just what you think the state should have to do when they are going to execute a person.
I think the states should find a method that actually work properly and quickly. Lethal injection is the most common now, I don't think there are anymore electric chairs or anything like that. There has to be some type of medicine that would allow inmates to be executed the right way. I think lethal injection is still a good idea as long as they find the right type of drug for it.

A. Recently a ferry ran aground and sunk in South Korea. Many of the people on board who were killed were high school students on a field trip. As the investigation has continued a number of people have been arrested and will be charged with a crime. Among those are the captain of the ship who was reportedly one of the first off the ship and was on one of the few lifeboats that got away. The ship had been modified to carry more passengers and this may have contributed to its sinking (which was very quick, some reports say as fast as 10 minutes). It has spread to the government of South Korea and the Prime Minister of the country resigned over the weekend. What do you know and think about this event? AND (please don't forget this part) Who should be held accountable, the captain of the ship, the owners of the ship itself, the Prime Minister of the country (this would be like President Obama resigning over an airplane crash that killed 300 people because he withheld information about the crash for some reason)??? Why??
I know that hundreds of people had been missing right after it sunk. I heard that a lot of the people aboard were in high school. I also know that the death rates from the ship sinking are still rising. I think that the captain of the ship should be held accountable for the incident. He is suppose to be the person that makes sure everything is okay, and you would think he would try to help the kids before saving himself. He should be responsible because he was in charge of that ship at that time and he did nothing to help after it started sinking.

A. Why do you think that these random acts of violence keep occurring at US Military bases here in the United States, like the one that happened at Fort Hood yesterday? Remember this is the second time in just a short number of years that this has happened at that base.
I think these random acts of violence keep happening because many soldiers or veterans have a lot of issues that they may not know how to deal with. Some have PTSD or other mental disorders and they feel the need to take out their anger on people that have made them mad. It could also be that they just don't know what to do with their lives and don't know how to handle things.

Magazines Part II
1. Early Magazine Covers: They mimic the covers of books by only putting the title and publication data. They wouldn't have words that let the reader know what to expect to see inside the magazine. Some of them had small illustrations. There were also symbolic covers that were used to show the feel of the publication.
2. The Poster Cover: They were covers in which the picture or logo was main thing that you saw, with a small amount of words. The art on the cover was meant to override the words and explain without words. The words shouldn't be necessary and the picture should explain it all. Few words were used.
3. Pictures Married to Type: Cover lines were used the most to try to bring the readers attention inside, rather than using the art. Although, some covers use only images to portray the message. Some other covers use cover lines and pictures to get the message across.

My Favorite Cover
Description: Cover of Glamour magazine
This is good formal magazine cover. It shows how happy Michelle Obama is to be named one of the women of the year by this magazine. The bright colors make it pop and it grabs your attention. The light background against her skin tone and dress make the mood feel happy. Mrs. Obama's position in the pose kind of makes it seem like she is comfortable and honored to be there. The exposure brings out the shiny glow of her skin.

A. Read the opinion article on page A9 titled Mentally disabled inmates still routinely put to death in Texas. Give me your opinion about this topic. Please reference the article to support your opinion. The simple question to answer is do you agree or disagree with the writer.
I do think that mentally disabled inmates should be put to death. They are humans just like everybody else, even though they are different in certain ways. If somebody is capable of committing a crime like a "normal" person would, then why shouldn't they be punished the same way? It's not right to treat them differently, because the victim's family is still hurt and it wouldn't be fair to go easy on the criminal because he's different.

Self Portraits and Portraits Part 1
1. Alter Your Perspective
Most portraits are taken with the camera at (or around) the eye level of the subject. While this is good common sense – completely changing the angle that you shoot from can give your portrait a real WOW factor.
2. Shoot Candidly
Sometimes posed shots can look somewhat…. posed. Some people don’t look good in a posed environment and so switching to a candid type approach can work.
Environmental
I chose this picture because of how it shows what he is doing and he is obviously happy with it. I like that he is showing emotion and doing his job.
I chose this picture because of the movement and flexibility that is shown. It is a great shot and it seems as if she is enjoying that she is doing.
Photography
I chose this picture because of the color and background. I like it because she's not looking at the camera, it was taken up close, and seems to be taken off-guard.
I chose this picture because of the black and white colors and the camera being in the photo. I like that there is a prop in the picture and how his expression is plain.
Casual
I chose this picture because of the background and the overall colors in the picture. It is bright and I like that the background is vibrant. She also seems super happy.
I chose this picture because of the framing around the subject. I like that she is kneeling down and holding on to the sides. I also like that there is a lake or pond in the background and you can see the water.
I plan on shooting at my house, either inside or outside in the yard. I will take photos of myself and my friend Alex Barcenas. To make the photos successful, I will apply as many rules of photography as I can and remember the helpful tips when taking each different shot.
